In a world where supermarts pepper the landscape, offering inexpensive clothing for less than the cost of a magazine; where racks overflowing with mass-produced items for children are commonplace, you may ask: "why?" Why does anyone bother to handcraft clothing, let alone clothing for children?
Over the past thirty years or so, the practice of sewing for children has become a lost art. Many public schools no longer offer courses in sewing, nor do mothers pass the craft down to their daughters. Outsourcing and sweatshop labor has tarnished the public's perception of the true value of the art form. Quite recently, however, there has been a renewed interest in the craft, particularly among young people, as well as a high demand for quality, handcrafted boutiquewear for children. People are tiring of the cookie-cutter clothing they find in the stores and the inferior quality of mass-produced childrenswear. The renaissance of the children's handmade boutique clothing industry is just beginning to emerge.
Forty years ago, it was likely that every American child had at least one handmade garment in their closet. Mothers, grandmothers, aunts and sisters...practically every woman in the country knew how to sew and many delighted in the joys of making hand sewn clothing for the children in their lives. I can still recall sitting on the floor beside my mother as she sewed or knit, anxiously awaiting the moment that she let me try on the outfit she was making for me. I remember how special I felt, knowing the shirt or dress I was wearing was made "just for me."
